How to increase my sales in eBay

Here’s a way to increase sales on your ebay store—and it won’t cost you anything up front.

Say you charge $6.99 to ship a single item. In reality, this shipment actually costs you about $2 in materials and postage. Obviously, this allows you to turn a tidy profit of about $5 for each sale. But if you look beyond the individual sale, you’ll see that there’s a way to make more money while simultaneously giving your customers a better bargain.

The key is to give your customers an incentive to buy more than one item from you. For example, offer your customers discounted shipping on additional purchases, say $6.99 for the first item and $2.49 for each additional item. This means that a customer who buys three items from you will be paying you $11.97 to ship a package that probably still costs you no more than about $2.00 to ship. All of a sudden, you’ve made $10.00 in profit from a customer that otherwise would’ve stopped at one item.

To implement this in your listings, go to My eBay  eBay Preferences, scroll down to the Seller Preferences section, and click the Change link next to “Shipping preferences: Offer combined payment discounts.”

Here, you can choose the window of time during which customers can purchase several items from you and receive the discount. If you choose a shorter window, like three days, it’ll decrease the odds that your customers will use it, but it will also decrease the amount of time you’ll have to wait to receive payment for any given item. In most cases, seven days is a good compromise. – from David Karp
